Low-field NMR

While NMR spectroscopy is typically performed at magnetic fields of 1 tesla and higher, we’re developing methods that work down to millitesla field strengths.

Applications

  • Portable spectrometers
  • Miniaturization and chip-scale devices
  • Reaction monitoring
  • Mixture analysis
  • Structure determination

Advantages

Our unique methods are highly sensitive to J-couplings and chemical exchange, providing better results than high-field techniques in certain regimes.

Examples

SLIC and SyncE spectroscopy can sensitively measure proton exchange rates via changes in the spectral pattern.
Small concentrations of acid contaminants can be detected via changes in chemical exchange. Here, the D-mandelate sample likely contains residual D-mandelic acid left over from the synthesis.
By measuring the chemical exchange rate, SyncE spectroscopy can determine the concentration of water in ethanol with similar accuracy to high-field EXSY NMR.
Low-field NMR with SLIC can measure long-range J-couplings with high sensitivity without the field homogeneity requirements of high-field NMR.
